I am in Califormia. Just bought an om606 swapped 87 wagon. It has 6mm elements tuned to 200hp by a Bosch shop. The power seems reasonable, but not great. I kind of doubt that it makes 200hp actually.
The stock k14 Turbo must be part of the problem. Alcaid suggested fitting a td05H-16g small turbo with 10cm housing, which is tempting. But that will require the usual custom turbo modifocations. And will spool ok but not super fast I think.
I really like the idea of compounds at modest power level. The bmw 535d had a bog warner r2s unit with a k26 low pressure and the high pressure turbo super small, same as stock on 1.9vw motor. That should spool super early and run on the big turbo only at high rpm. Ratings on that 3.0L 6 cyl motor were 238hp and more torque, maybe 400nm, which sounds useful for daily stop and go traffic.
My reference cars are a 2005 g55 with 500÷hp supercharged, and a 3.0 tdi vw touareg. I like the Touareg spool but think an r2s would/should spool earlier than the vnt on that car, which also has about 230hp/400ft-lb torque. Basically my goal is to get immediate boost. More like the g55 off the line. There are very few chances to use high horsepower in LA, but lots of chances to zip in and out of gaps in traffic, protect the gap in front of your car, etc with a bit of torque at lower rpm.
I have seen a guy with 6mm elements on youtube claiming 374hp. Do you guys think I can use 6mm and retune the pump, or do I need new elements? And what sort of turbo combination will meet my goals, assuming compound?
